Wow! Sort of like a chess bar but so much richer and ooey, gooey! Five stars easily! Wal-Mart bakery sells this under the Paula Deen brand and if the homemade version is even half as good, it's still incredibly rich and luxurious.

My family and friends loved this cake. I topped it with fresh strawberries and it was delicious. I did however use a little less sugar than 16 oz....about 10 oz and it was plenty sweet!!! I will be making again and again!

What made me wait so long to try this recipe?? It's absolutely delicious...I thought I had yellow cake mix, but only had orange. So I used that, put a few drops of orange extract into the filling along with the vanilla, and it came out amazing! I was also missing confectioner's sugar (I should probably start paying better attention when I use up stuff in my pantry) so I used 1 cup granulated sugar and it was perfect. Not too sweet but just sweet enough. I can't wait to try with other flavors!

My family has made this cake for years. I tried the Pumpkin for Thanksgiving one year and everyone loved it. I don't even make the Pumpkin pie anymore. Try baking it in a Jellyroll pan, it's like brownies, makes more servings and isn't quite so rich. Think I'll try one with peaches since they are in season now. Thanks Paula

Saw this cake being made on one of Paula's shows several years back. Been making the original version ever sense. I have tried other flavor versions (and I love chocolate....who doesn't....) but my family and I love the original the best!!! Make it for ever major and minor holiday out there, take it to work for holiday dinners, when folks come over for supper, or just for the heck of it. My daughters (3 of them) and their friends all call it "Oooeeeyyy Gooeeeyyy". Ever now and then, I'll get a call from one of their friends and all I'll hear is "Hey Mama, Oooeeeyyy Gooeeeyyy"! This cake is easy to make, super sweet and scrumpdilleeicous!!! I'd rate it a "10"!!!!!!! We love you Paula!!! Thanks for all your AWESOME recipes!!! Wilma from South Carolina

I have made this cake a couple of times and it's fabulous!! I made the original, but melted some raspberry preserves in the microwave and spread it over the cake part (I used Duncan Hines Yellow Butter)and to the filling, I added a bag of white chocolate chips. I also made it with DH Chocolate Fudge Cake. I melted some orange marmalade and added about 2 tsps of Cointreau to it and spread it over the cake. I added mini chocolate chips to the filling and 1 tsp of white Creme de Cocoa and 1/2 tsp of vanilla.

This recipe is pretty simple to make. I have been eating gooey butter cake for over 55 yrs. The best bakery cake came from Kruta's bakery in E. St. Louis, Illinois. I know nothing of the St. Louis side of the Mississippi's bakery known for this famous recipe. I have made your recipe and the original recipe (made with powdered sugar and not regular sugar and it turned out just great. By the way, these gooey butter cakes freeze real well. Always bring them back to CA. after visiting relatives in Illinois and freeze them until they can be passed out to all the relatives here waiting for one.

This is a fabulous cake to make when you have company or to take to work. You don't want these leftovers laying around or you'll need a shoehorn to get your pants on the next day. I've tried tons of variations, love the chocolate best. I use a chocolate fudge cake mix for the bottom, and spread it only across the bottom because it will rise up. I also add 4 TBSP of cocoa powder to the cream cheese mixture. I also love this with carrot cake mix and also red velvet cake mix. I always bake it at night, it tastes amazing the next day!

Paula, being from Savannah, GA...I LOVE all of your recipes. Some of these folks writing these reviews trip me out. They should actually read the recipe BEFORE they start cooking...and they would realize how sweet the cake is going to be. I have read a lot reviews on different sites talking about how unhealthy Paulas cooking is. Southern cooking is filled with BUTTER, sugar, lard, flour...if you think it's too unhealthy...then DON'T EAT IT! As for me, my family and the rest of us southerners...keep the excellent recipes coming Paula!

This is a great recipe. Go to St. Louis for the real thing! There is also a harder version recipe which involves yeast for the base and Eagle brand for the filling. Also yummy.
Submitted on April 4, 2010

This is good but I know an even tastier recipe which uses yeast in the base and Eagle brand in the filling. If you really want to try this go to St. Louis sometime. It was started in St. Louis a long time ago by a baker who made a mistake and accidentally created it.
Submitted on April 4, 2010

By now, Paula is probably sick and tired of hearing from St. Louis folk like me talking about the GB coffee cake. Anyway, just thought I would add something. There is another, harder version. Base: 1/4 cup milk, 1/4 cup water, 1/2 stick butter, 1/4 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 1/4 cup flour, 1 pkg yeast, 1 egg. Heat liquids and butter until warm. Mix 3/4 cup flour with yeast, sugar and salt. Add liquids, beat 2 minutes. Add 1/4 cup flour and egg, beat on high 2 minutes. Stir in enough flour to make a dough that can be turned out, but still sticky. Work in enough flour to handle easily; knead 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Grease and flour 2 8" pans. Shape dough into pans, pressing up sides. Prepare a filling. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Filling: 3/4 cup of Eagle Brand divided into 1/2 and 1/4 cup. 2 sticks butter. 1/2 cup shortening. 3/4 cup of light Karo, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup flour, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla, pinch of salt. Cream butter with shortening. Add 1/2 cup Eagle Brand, beat until light. Add Karo and mix thoroughly. Add egg, beat until fully incorporated. Add flour and 1/4 cup Eagle Brand, mix. Add vanilla and salt, mix. Divide over 2 pans, bake 30 minutes. Filling should not be brown. Good stuff.

I love this cake and have baked it several times. I am always sure to pat the crust mixture up the sides of the pan, too. I usually sprinkle chocolate chips on it before cooking. After about 35 minutes, I take it out and cover the edges with tin foil to stop them from becoming too brown. This cake is delicious served cold, too. If it gets too hard in the refigerator, you are probably cooking it too long. I have also tried a variation with lemon cake mix and sprinkled a few fresh blueberries on top. You can try all kids of things with this recipe!!

Ok so I've made this with many different types of cakes mix. I read where someone said to use "pineapple" cake mix. Well I did and YES it was SOOOO YUMMY!!!! My house smelled like I was cooking Hawaiian food! Really it did! Ok so now I tried a new cake mix today. I tired making it with "French Vanilla" cake mix. Talk about the BEST cake and best this side of the mississippi river !!!! Oh boy !! Sweet and good and well...just awsome !! Reminded me of the taste you get when you buy one of those really super expensive coffee drink with the sweet whip cream on top (you know lol) that is if you order the french vanilla cappacinno. Ok so now that that went really great...I'd like to know if there is a "coffee flavored" cake out there ?? Is there?? If so, what store carries them? This is the best cake ever. I used a cocnut cake mix and added a bag of coconut and 1-1 1/2 cup of sliced roasted almonds in the cream cheese mixture. After it cooks I topped with chocolate chips and put back in oven for a few minutes and when it comes out of the oven spread the chocolate. WOW! Taste like an almond joy bar!!

I made this cake in the Chocolate Version, followed the recipe to a T, and it raised up and fell all over the bottom of my oven. I'm at 6250 altitude. Should I have adjusted the recipe? The cake mix calls for a change in the flour of adding 2 T. Would that fix it? Loved the cake--Hated the mess.

This is a very sweet cake, if you would like a little lighter version, try Bobby's Lighter Gooey Butter Cake or this St. Louis original version that I posted earlier. Both are fantastic! Happy Baking! St. Louis Original Gooey Butter Cake Yields: 2 cakes Ingredients: For Dough: ¼ cup sugar ¼ cup shortening ¼ teaspoon salt 1 large egg 1 envelope (¼ oz.) dry yeast ½ cup milk, warm 2 ½ cups All Purpose flour 1 tablespoon vanilla extract For Gooey Butter Center: 2 ½ cups sugar 1 cup butter, softened 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 large egg ¼ cup light corn syrup 2 ¼ cup All Purpose flour ¼ cup water 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 4 tablespoons powdered sugar for garnish, divided Directions: For Dough: In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and set aside. In the bowl of a standing mixer with a whisk attachment, cream sugar, shortening and salt until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Change the whisk attachment to a dough hook and add flour, yeast mixture and vanilla to the sugar mixture. Mix for 3 minutes. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead with your hands an additional minute. Spray a bowl with non stick cooking spray and place dough in turning over once. Cover with a towel and set aside in a warm place to rise for approximately 1 hour. Spray two 8X8 inch baking pans with non stick cooking spray. Once the dough has risen, divide it into two equal parts. Using your hands or a rolling pin, pat the dough into the bottom of each pan and up the sides. Stick it in a few places with a fork so it doesn't bubble up when baking. Set aside while you prepare the gooey part. In the bowl of a standing mixer with a whisk attachment, combine the sugar butter and salt. Mix until fluffy. Add the egg and corn syrup mixing well after each addition. Finally, add in the flour, water and vanilla mixing well after each addition. Divide the gooey butter equally between the two pans prepared with the dough. Spread evenly over the dough of each pan. Let rest for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 375º F. Bake for 20-25 minutes. The tops will start to turn a golden brown. Do not over bake. Remove from oven and let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack. Sprinkle each cake with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar. Serve at room temperature. Refrigerate leftovers. I had printed this recipe for this cake from this website many months ago and finally made this cake last week. What was I thinking??? This cake is just awful! It's way too sweet! Entirely too much powdered sugar. This cake would send most people into a diabetic coma! And to think that I wasted perfectly good cream cheese on this. Never again.
Submitted on January 1, 2010

Great recipe! Adjust sugar to tone down sweetness. Pumpkin needs 3/4 to 1 lb sugar. Chocolate less. Maybe the original needs 1/2 lb? Cooking times vary by the amount of "wet" ingredients. Chocolate about 50 minutes, pumpkin 60-70.

Love this Recipe! It is sooo delicious. I make this with a chocolate cake mix then add chocolate chips and coconut to the topping. It doesnt last two days in my house. Just Wonderful!! Thanks Paula
Submitted on January 1, 2010

Made this once and oh my gosh I've been making it all the time now because it doesn't last but a few days in my house. I find forks in my pyrex dish that someone has just walked by and pick it out just with a fork. I asked and they all say "it's just soooo GOOD"! Now I make them get a plate !! I have now been using other flavored cake mixes. Ok so now it's even yummier !!! The last cake mix I used was "Pineapple" cake mix and that to me was the BEST! I wanna try cherry chip cake mix and Red Velvet Cake mix next. I had my family trying to guess what kind of cake mix I used when I made it with Pineapple Cake Mix and nobody guessed it lol all they could say is that is was Great!! They could even smell the flavor sniffing the cake, but could not guess it ; ) They said it was on the tip of their tongue, but they all got it wrong. But they were very, very close to the flavor. We had fun with that one !! Try using Pineapple Cake Mix it's out of this world GOOD !!! My favorite that's for sure!!!

Paula, I luv ya, darlin', but let's give credit where credit is due...this scrumptious cake was the result of a German baker in St. Louis, MO who confused his proportions of flour and sugar, resulting in a most delicous "mistake". I made this on a Saturday LATE NIGHT and my family started to eat it right out of the pan with their own forks. Ok...so I said I made this late Saturday night right? Well....this entire cake was gone Sunday night !!! It took 1 day to be gonzo!! Monday I looked in the pan and there were only the crumbs that broke off. So yeah...the cake was gone basically in one day! SOOOO YUMMY !! I got a small piece to taste when it was done and later that night after it set, I took a small piece for me. So needless to say my family LOVED IT! My husband said it was the best flippin cake he's EVER had.I have now been asked to bake anohter one. I tried this making chocolate cookies. Can anyone say YUMMY and SO easy! I did't think that they would need extra powdered sugar sprinkled on top like she said to do, but they did. They are still good - it's just that they tasted "all chocolate". they were still good...just really needed that extra sprinkle of powder sugar to make this cookie Perfect! After I made my cookies using the gooey buter cake I looked in my backyard and my husband's freind was out there and I ran a cookie out to him and I asked him "what do you think" he said omg there good, but they need some powder sugar. So I sprinkled some powder sugar on top and he was right : ) I had him taste another cookie with more poweder sugar and he said "now that's Perfect" ! Thank you Ms. Deen for a WONDERFUL AND EASY cookie out of this. As always Ms. Deen you are the best!

Back in St. Louis, where we are from, we can buy gooey butter cakes everywhere from the grocery store to almost any bakery in town. We have now moved to Mississippi and cannot find one anywhere, so I tried your recipe. MMMMM. If I had known how much better this recipe is than a store bought I would have been making them from the beginning. Paula I'd never made this before, and found it inside your cookbook that you graciously gave out at the MomLogic taping in September. Good God Almighty......this is one very unique, De-LISH dessert, and I never use cake mixes for anything. WOW is all I can say. I've tried the pumpkin, and now I'm moving on to the chocolate and peanut butter. Stay tuned.......Mark

I have made this cake for many years, and there is not a crumb left over. My favorite is to use a brownie mix instead of a cake mix. It is sooooo gooooooood!

I broght this to a friend's for dinner and it was a hit! I believe the exact quote he used was "I'm so full, I'm in pain. But I have to have just...one more...piece of the best cake...EVER!" It really is very good. Tastes like happy.

I made this on the recommendation of a friend. Once I made it, I realized that this is a cake my mama made all the time when I was a kid. She called it a Neiman Marcus cake. I have made three in the last week and couldn't figure out how they were being eaten so quickly. Come to find out my daughter was taking pieces to school to share/trade at lunch.

Just okay. Nothing spectacular. I like the chewy crust but overall, not a whole lot of flavor. I was disappointed because I'm butter's biggest fan but, just eh.
