Fried Apple Pies Fried Apple Pies

A twist on traditional apple pie.  Perfect ala mode.

Cook Time: 25 min
Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients Add to grocery list

2 tablespoons butter
4 McIntosh apples, peeled, cored, and sliced, or 1 can apple pie filling
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 (8-piece) container refrigerated flaky biscuit dough
2 tablespoons water
Powdered sugar

Directions

Filling: Add the butter to a large saute pan and melt. Add the apples, sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the apples are soft, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool.

When the filling is cool, roll the biscuits out on a lightly floured surface so that each biscuit forms a 7 to 8-inch circle. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons of the filling on each biscuit circle. Brush the edges of the circle with water. Fold the circle over the filling to make a half-moon shape. Seal by pressing the edges with the tines of a fork.

Preheat deep-fryer with oil to 350 degrees F.

Carefully add the pies to the oil, 1 at a time, and fry until golden brown, turning the pies as necessary for even browning, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with powdered sugar immediately.

JL to keep your pies from opening during frying touch the edges with egg whites instead of water and never poke air holes in the crust. After touching the edges with water press the edges together then push down/seal with a fork.

Paula, could these be fried in a skillet instead of deep fryer?

Paula I love your recipes, but this one is awful. All I ended up with was a deep fried mess. It took 2 cans of biscuits before I realized that this recipe just does not work. I used less filling and it still squished out when folded. I finally got one to work using a fraction of a teaspoon of filling when I went to fry it, all of the filling ran out in the hot oil. I followed the recipe to the letter. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

Looking for Paula's recipe for her fried pecan pies. She cooks the filling on top of the stove until thick and uses a store bought crust. I saw this episode on the Food Network, but didn't get all the ingredients nor the cooking time. Got everything else. Thanks, Brenda

I love this fried pie recipe. My granny and I always cooked together. I may live in the midwest now, but I was born and raised in the south! You might also try fried chocolate pies and fried peach! They are wonderful!

Dear Paula, I love your recipes and shows and your southern charm so much I do not mean any disrespect to you by calling your Paula instead of Ms. Deen. I ldearly love your laughter and fun while you are cooking and enjoying yourself with your family and friends. I myself love laughter and do not do enough of it, however this was not the topic I wanted to talk to you about. I recently bought one of your Pumpkin Pecan Pies. Well all I can said is Wow!! My husband who doesn't usually eat pumpkin pie actually ate a bite of mine and asked for more. Well for Christmas I was going to buy another one and could not find one. I was wondering if you only sell those at Thanksgiving or is it something that can be bought at anytime? Would appreciate your help. By the way MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS as I know he does everyday that we are alive, we just don't realize all the blessing he bestows on us each and every breathing moment of our lives. Thank you I tend to rattle on,forgive me I know your a very busy active person. Thanks again and let me know about your pumpkin pecan pie.

This was excellent, but i did an easy version of it, i bought the store pie crust, and had my kids cut out 4 inch circles with a floured cup top. we then had a smorgesborg of pie fillings, they put the pie filling in the middle, we crimped edges fried as described then sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. OMG was this spectacular warm with vanilla ice cream on top. Thanks Paula for this recipe, although i didn't use it exactly it was a great idea that i turned into my own.
